The Kinnaura tribe of Himachal Pradesh possesses a rich tradition of oral history and collective memory, deeply interweaved with the topography of the Himalayas. This project explores their perspective on nature through the folklore of mythical creatures believed to inhabit the region. These tales represent a larger idea: attributing characteristics to the land to protect it from human avarice through fear and reverence. While the tribe practices a form of eco-egalitarianism, the landscape’s equilibrium is currently threatened by corporate greed and the ongoing climate crisis. These creatures, now seemingly extinct, symbolize the environmental losses incurred in the pursuit of development. Within the oscillation of time, the real and the imaginary, lies a tribal population caught in the crossfire. Using staged images and community collaboration, the project explores ecology beyond traditional ethnographic concepts, documenting how folklore serves as a vital mechanism for understanding a community’s profound, spiritual relationship with its changing environment.
