This project aims to empower India’s traditional fishing communities, specifically small-scale fishers, fisherwomen, and buyers, through a simple and accessible digital solution. Field research at Sassoon Dock, Mumbai, revealed critical gaps in how these communities manage daily trade, loans, and financial records, often relying on fallible verbal agreements or handwritten notes. In response, a multilingual, icon-based mobile app was designed to work offline. It supports users with trade records, loan tracking, and information on sustainable practices, effectively reducing reliance on middlemen. Furthermore, the project proposes an ergonomic physical device to assist with fish sorting, cleaning, and waste storage, which integrates with the app to promote better hygiene and efficiency. The goal is not just digital transformation, but livelihood improvement and environmental sustainability. By combining technology, empathy, and user-centred design, this project creates a vital bridge between traditional fishing practices and modern tools, empowering communities while respecting their unique cultural heritage.
