This project explores the application of Sikki craft, an endangered traditional craft from Bihar, within a contemporary furniture design context. The objective was to examine how this natural, biodegradable material could be adapted beyond decorative objects and translated into a functional furniture piece. By designing a chair using Sikki grass, the project investigates the craft’s structural potential while responding to modern ergonomic and aesthetic requirements. Known for its fine detailing and symbolic motifs inspired by nature and folklore, Sikki craft carries strong cultural and ecological value. However, the declining number of artisans and the rise of mass-produced alternatives have threatened its continuity. This project aims to contribute to the revival of the craft by demonstrating its relevance in high-end, contemporary design. Through careful material exploration and form development, the project highlights how traditional techniques can evolve into sustainable, functional, and culturally rooted furniture suited for present-day contexts.
