Elements of Surprise in Watch Design

  • Surprise as a Design Strategy
  • Temporal Experiences
  • Emotive Interactions
  • Material-Led Exploration
  • Experiential Timepieces
SHREYA RAJENDRA GAIKWAD
Mr. Mohammed Naim
The project explores the idea of surprise as a design strategy. Guided by the belief that everyday objects can evoke emotion, it investigates how watches, often reduced to utility or luxury, can become sites of experiential delight. It looks at how subtle visual illusions, hidden interactions, and material led explorations can elevate a product beyond its functional role. The process also delves into the nuances of emotive design, highlighting the role of intuition in decision making while shaping meaningful timepieces. Through iterative research and prototyping, the project led to the development of three distinct concepts, each incorporating effects like 3d Lenticular visuals, Infinity mirror depth, and Lubor lens veiling to create illusions of motion, depth, and discovery. Beyond the technical and design aspects, the project also considers how people emotionally engage with objects, why certain designs resonate, and the importance of designing for delight and anticipation.
