A Work of Fiction is a short film exploring the inner world of a Silent Abuse Survivor through the lens of lucid dreaming. The story follows an unnamed protagonist whose conscience and subconscious wrestle over desire, lust, love, and the resurfacing guilt and shame of past trauma. Inspired by Joanna Bourke’s observation that “rape is not a moment; it is a relationship to memory,” the film navigates the psychological aftermath of abuse, showing its profound impact on both mental and physical well-being. Through dreamlike sequences, the protagonist engages in discussions with her therapist, who gradually reveals herself as a reflection of the protagonist, forcing a confrontation with repressed memories. The subconscious manifests as a distinct entity, leaving the protagonist with no escape but to face the past and arrive at a breakthrough moment of self-acceptance or remain trapped in the cyclical labyrinth of her mind.
