Sleepwalker Archives is an experimental exhibition commissioned by the India Foundation for the Arts and presented at the French Institute of Pondicherry from May 15 to July 3, 2024. Co-curated by three artist-researchers and the author, the project reimagines archival engagement through object-based storytelling. Drawing from the Institute’s Herbarium Collection and Photo Archives, the exhibition blurs boundaries between scientific documentation and poetic interpretation. Framed through a fictional narrative of a researcher who abandons orderly cataloguing to create a personal archive, the exhibition unfolds as a layered environment of photographs, herbarium reproductions, card catalogues, maps, instruments, and natural materials. These elements animate hidden connections between objects and the worlds they represent. Through collaborative, interpretivist curation, Sleepwalker Archives situates archival practice within contemporary concerns of ecological loss, material decay, and extinction, proposing new ways of encountering archives as living, affective spaces rather than static repositories.
