Anvesa is a material-driven exploration focused on understanding the potential of paper mâché as a versatile, handmade medium capable of serving both functional and artistic purposes. Inspired by the vibrant cultural landscape of Goa, particularly its carnivals and the Narkasura festival, the project draws from the region’s expressive forms, colours, and celebratory spirit. The process involved learning traditional paper mâché techniques while experimenting with form, structure, and application to explore how the material can adapt to varied functions. Emphasis was placed on understanding the material’s behaviour, flexibility, and capacity for transformation using secondary raw materials. The resulting outcomes reflect a balance between craft, culture, and contemporary design, highlighting paper mâché as a sustainable and expressive medium. The project positions handmade material exploration as a meaningful approach to design, where cultural context and material knowledge come together to create forms that are both functional and evocative.
