This project explores systemic game design and the role of emergent behaviour in creating dynamic, player-driven experiences. Inspired by cellular automata and complex systems, it investigates how simple rule sets can generate intricate and unpredictable gameplay. The research begins with an autoethnographic reflection on personal gaming experiences to understand what creates lasting engagement. It then draws from game design literature, systems thinking, biology, and case studies to examine how minimal designer intervention can encourage maximum player creativity. The project questions traditional design approaches that rely on rigid structures and instead explores games as evolving systems shaped by player interaction. Central to the inquiry is the idea of “perfect systems” and whether tightly controlled frameworks limit or enable creative play. Ultimately, the project views games as living ecosystems that are adaptive, emergent, and rich with possibility, redefining how designers can think about agency, complexity, and play.
