South Asia is a melting pot of cultures shaped by diasporic influences from across the world. India, like other South Asian regions, continues to decolonise and preserve its distinct cultural identity. The DTIG Project (Documentation of Traditional Indian Garments), initiated in 1981 by Prof. Madhurima Patni, undertook extensive documentation of material and non-material sartorial practices across Gujarat and Rajasthan. This Graduation Project focuses on cataloguing a part of the DTIG collection and delving deeper into the Angrakha through intensive research and documentation. Although rooted in the Indian subcontinent, the Angrakha reflects centuries of cultural exchange through trade, migration, and geopolitics. This work is both inspired by and an ode to Prof. Patni’s dedication to costume studies and her spirit of knowledge-sharing. The research serves as a first step toward understanding this indigenous garment through the lenses of technology, typology, anthropology, design, and its evolution.
