This graduation project was developed in collaboration with Avani, a voluntary organisation working in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand to support sustainable livelihoods through appropriate technologies and craft-based enterprises. The project focused on Avani’s natural textile initiative, Earthcraft, an artisan-owned cooperative engaged in handwoven and naturally dyed textiles. Conducted at Avani’s headquarters in Tripuradevi, Pithoragarh district, the project aimed to understand how a grassroots organisation operates in a remote Himalayan context and enables livelihood opportunities for local communities. Primary research involved studying traditional textile practices followed by independent artisans in the region, which informed the refinement of the design brief and the development of a graduate textile collection responsive to local materials and conditions. Working in a remote setting highlighted challenges related to resource access, while the integrated campus environment enabled continuous engagement with craft processes, artisans, and community-led production systems.
