Echoes of Choice explores how level design influences player navigation, engagement, and decision-making in open-world RPGs. The project investigates the relationship between spatial layout, visual cues, and player psychology through a mixed-methods approach combining literature review, case studies, surveys, and playtesting. Insights from academic and industry sources informed the development of a prototype maze-based navigation tool that integrates techniques such as triangulation, color-based cues, and environmental guidance. Player studies involving diverse personas measured behaviour through metrics like completion time, stuck points, and resets, revealing how different players interpret guidance differently. The findings led to a framework for navigation design based on layered guidance, progressive clarity, cognitive load management, consistency, and freedom with recovery. The project bridges theory and practice, contributing actionable design guidelines and a playable prototype that demonstrates how level design can create intuitive, immersive, and psychologically engaging player experiences.
