This research investigates the evolution of roguelike games with the objective of developing a new game within the genre. The study combines a literature review and gameplay analysis to understand how roguelikes have developed over time. The literature review examines the historical origins of the genre, beginning with Rogue, the foundational game on which later titles are based. The gameplay analysis involves studying a range of roguelike games to examine core mechanics, level design, and player experience. Key characteristics analysed include procedurally generated levels, permadeath, and character progression systems. Insights from both research methods inform the design and development of a new roguelike game that reflects the genre’s defining principles while exploring opportunities for innovation. The project aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of roguelike design and demonstrate how research-led analysis can inform meaningful game development.
