When We Fall Asleep is a visual art project investigating the intense emotional and psychological experience of sleep paralysis, a state where the mind wakes while the body remains frozen. Drawing from personal encounters with fear and hallucinations, the project blurs the line between dreams and reality to reflect on trauma and eerie presence. Using photography and mixed media techniques like long exposure and emulsion lifts, the series recreates the distorted, dreamlike quality of these vulnerable moments. Shadows, fragile glass objects, and altered spaces portray the sensation of being trapped or watched. The narrative unfolds in three stages: the onset, the confrontation with imagined creatures, and the emotional aftermath. By transforming these terrifying experiences into visual art, I aim to reclaim control and turn fear into creative expression. The project explores the quiet struggle between the conscious and unconscious, finding profound meaning in the most vulnerable states of being.
