The contemporary world is increasingly shaped by constant digital distractions and fast-paced lifestyles, leading to a growing interest in alternative approaches to wellbeing rooted in creativity and nature. Clay, one of humanity’s most fundamental materials, offers a simple yet engaging medium for expression. Patterned Studio has conducted pottery workshops for nearly a decade, with many aspiring participants expressing interest but lacking access to in-person experiences. This project responds by designing a beginner-friendly DIY clay kit for all ages, aimed at making the joy of working with clay accessible, engaging and relaxing while upholding sustainable values. The project studied emotional, physiological, and psychological responses to working with clay in unsupervised settings to design inclusive activities for varied age groups and group sizes. Insights were drawn from observing Patterned Studio’s in-house workshops. The kit uses beginner-friendly stoneware clay, supported by illustrated instructions and activities to enable independent learning without instructor supervision.
