This graduation project explored the integration of traditional handloom weaving practices of women weavers in Assam with design-led experimentation. Developed over five months, the project resulted in two distinct collections. The first focused on documenting and understanding the indigenous weaving practices of the Rabha community, with emphasis on skill levels, extra-weft design vocabulary, and the symbolic use of colour and motifs that form a core part of their cultural identity. Market analysis was conducted to identify opportunities to reinterpret these traditional designs within contemporary contexts, highlighting the craft’s potential to engage modern urban audiences. The second collection, a saree range titled Majuli, drew inspiration from the serene cultural landscape of Assam, particularly the river island of Majuli. The collection explored Endi (Eri) silk as the primary material, leveraging its soft texture, organic sheen, and breathability to support a slow, thoughtful design process that balanced tradition with innovation.
