This project explores the integration of Bastar’s Dhokra craft into a premium wooden furniture collection with a modern Indian design approach. The objective was to blend contemporary aesthetics with traditional craft techniques while preserving the cultural identity and perceived value of Dhokra. Originating from the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, Dhokra is a centuries-old, sustainable metal casting craft practiced by tribal artisans and known for its intricate detailing and distinctive style. This project applies Dhokra brass accents to a domestic furniture collection crafted primarily in teak wood, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and material richness. The outcome includes a bedroom lounge set comprising a lounge chair with ottoman, a floor lamp, and a side table. Undertaken in collaboration with House of Bastar, a Raipur-based furniture design and manufacturing studio, the project reflects an exploration of craft-led design, material experimentation, and contemporary furniture production.
