Unbound is a graduation project developed at Aranya Naturals, Munnar, exploring the expressive potential of Shibori and natural dyeing in contemporary textile design. Drawing inspiration from Munnar’s landscapes, the project translates natural rhythms into textiles through layered surfaces, abstract forms, and fluid colour interactions. The work spans three collections. The first is an apparel line combining everyday wear and limited-edition garments, aligning with Aranya’s identity while reinterpreting Shibori in modern silhouettes. The second is a collection of organza silk sarees that explores spring-inspired palettes, degumming techniques, and translucent textural effects. The third focuses on summer wear in linen, developed through upcycling fabric leftovers and cut waste into value-added garments. Extensive experimentation with Shibori techniques and natural dyes was carried out through iterative sampling in collaboration with artisans, ensuring feasibility while encouraging innovation. The project positions Shibori and natural dyeing as adaptable, contemporary design mediums grounded in sustainability and craft knowledge.
