Malana AW'24 is a contemporary fashion collection inspired by the spiritual depth and autonomous traditions of Malana, Himachal Pradesh. Exploring the intersection of ancestral wisdom and modern design, the project reimagines local folklore and materials into functional, layered garments. Extensive fieldwork in the Seraj and Lahaul Valleys, alongside a collaboration with the Bhuttico weavers' cooperative, informed the collection's indigenous patterns and techniques. Traditional silhouettes like the cholu and pattu are merged with modern tailoring, utilising sustainable materials such as hemp, merino, and indigenous sheep wool. The palette of earthy browns, maroons, and slate greys reflects the rugged Himalayan terrain. Guided by slow fashion principles, the collection serves as a "wearable archive." Despite the challenges of coordinating with remote craft clusters, the result is a testament to ethical collaboration, preserving the cultural legacy of Himachal Pradesh through mindful, market-viable design.
