MANUPRIYA VARSHNEY
Mr. Amresh Panigrahi
This graduation project, sponsored by Mon Ami Foundation, focuses on empowering first-generation migrant women artisans by strengthening livelihoods through design-led craft interventions. The project adopts a systemic approach that integrates product design, skill development, and craft learning to promote self-reliance, confidence, and economic opportunity. The design outcomes include handcrafted giftables and accessories that blend traditional techniques with contemporary sensibilities. Three key directions were explored: a crochet doll collection addressing gaps in the Indian toy market, a fusion collection combining Madhubani painting with crochet, and a craft-based reinterpretation of Mehendi as a tangible product language. In parallel, a curated craft talk session was conducted to broaden artisans’ perspectives and situate their work within the larger craft ecosystem. The project demonstrates how thoughtful integration of design, learning, and cultural practice can support sustainable socio-economic empowerment while preserving craft heritage in evolving markets.
