In structural engineering, accuracy and efficiency are critical, particularly for safety-sensitive components such as baseplate connections. Hilti’s flexible baseplate calculation (CBFEM) tool offers high technical precision, but its value was underutilized due to a fragmented user experience. This project focused on improving the usability of the tool through design strategies tailored for complex enterprise workflows. The process began by understanding the specifier’s mindset, balancing safety, compliance, and speed under time pressure. User interviews and internal stakeholder insights were used to map the existing journey and identify friction points. Although technically robust, the tool lacked intuitive flow, causing users to miss features or adopt inefficient workarounds. The redesigned experience introduced clearer controls, improved visibility, and a more logical sequence, enabling faster iteration and easier learning. The project demonstrates how thoughtful UX design can enhance adoption and unlock value even in highly specialized engineering software.
