Shing-Rtsey is a furniture collection designed for hotel rooms in Ladakh, aiming to blend local craft traditions with modern comfort and usability suited to the hospitality industry. The project began with a study of Ladakhi materials and craftsmanship. While local wood carries strong cultural character, its irregularity, limited availability, and cost pose challenges for large-scale hotel use. To address this, alternative woods were explored through market research to ensure consistency, durability, and suitability to the local climate while maintaining a natural aesthetic. Design inspiration was drawn from Nakashima furniture, emphasizing respect for material, and Windsor furniture, influencing simple structures and joinery. These references were combined with Ladakhi design elements such as traditional forms and carvings to develop a contemporary yet rooted design language. The final collection reflects a balance of local identity, thoughtful craftsmanship, and practical requirements of hotel interiors, offering furniture that is culturally sensitive, functional, and feasible for hospitality settings.
