Achingyathottam (Snake Bean Farm) is a hand-drawn animated film that weaves personal history with profound social critique. Rooted in the filmmaker’s lived experience of her parents’ interfaith marriage, the project explores the friction between private resilience and public judgment. It tackles sensitive themes, including miscarriage, gendered expectations, religious pressure, and body politics, examining how these forces strain intimate relationships. The film’s development followed a non-linear, iterative process, allowing the narrative and visuals to evolve organically through storyboards and experimentation. More than just a personal memoir, this project serves as a critical inquiry into how animation can foster empathy and address discrimination. By synthesising research, interviews, and visual exploration, Achingyathottam positions storytelling as a vital tool for opening conversations around interfaith dynamics. Ultimately, the film demonstrates how the nuance of hand-drawn animation can transform complex social realities into a sensitive, evocative, and deeply human narrative.
