This design research project investigated the integration of textile and garment development through zero-waste strategies, placing handwoven textiles at the centre of the process. Guided by SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), the project aimed to expand zero-waste garment-making approaches through handloom weaving. Textiles were co-designed with Khoda Kaka, a handloom weaver from Surendranagar, Gujarat, who traditionally weaves Pachedi textiles. Using skill mapping and co-design methods, a vocabulary of woven stripes and motifs was developed to engineer textiles according to zero-waste apparel layouts. Fabric dimensions and design placements were planned with end-use in mind, addressing material losses associated with conventional cutting. The project further explored zero-waste pattern making through graded sizing permutations as speculative outcomes. By integrating textile and garment considerations from the outset, the work positions handloom weaving as an active contributor to contemporary sustainable fashion systems.
