Dev Samaj documents a vibrant Himachali festival where participants don masks representing Hanuman and other Ramayan characters, moving in sync with the beats of drums and melodies played by Bajatries. The film captures the ritualistic energy and cultural richness of the procession, highlighting the central role of music, traditionally performed by lower-caste musicians, in animating the festival. At the same time, the documentary critically explores embedded social hierarchies, including the restricted roles of certain community members and the objectification of women through performative gestures and costume choices. By weaving together celebration and social critique, Dev Samaj offers a nuanced portrayal of tradition, power, and participation in Himachali society.
