Flames of Defiance is a documentary that traces the parallel rise of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) and the Self-Employed Women’s Association–supported SMS movement, weaving institutional history with deeply personal narratives. Anchored by voices such as Noorjehan Safia Niaz (BMMA) and Nafisa Barot (Utthan–SMS), the film also foregrounds a new generation of area managers and bookkeepers who are carrying this legacy forward on the ground.
Using a layered, occasionally non-linear narrative, the film explores empowerment not as a singular victory but as a process marked by resistance, backlash, and hard-earned gains. Moving between urban and rural India, Flames of Defiance reveals how these women challenge entrenched power structures at the intersections of gender, caste, and religion, quietly but decisively reshaping social and political landscapes from within.
