Tools of Joyful Operations (TOJO) is a design framework built on the belief that products should spark emotional connections beyond simple functionality. TOJO explores how emotion can be intentionally designed into everyday objects, making them joyful rather than just usable. Developed through months of research with product enthusiasts and hardware startups, the framework was validated through four real-world projects, including STEM kits, modular tools, and smart home gadgets, some of which are already in the market. TOJO is not a rigid rulebook but a perspective for designers and makers to rethink the relationship between users and products. By balancing functional requirements with delight and discovery, the framework helps create products that resonate and stay with people meaningfully. Ultimately, the project demonstrates how an emotion-led design strategy can enhance product experience and brand loyalty, moving industrial design toward a more human-centered, delightful future where products function as companions.
