The project, in collaboration with Aavaran The Rural Echoes of India, explored a contemporary direction within craft context, focusing on Dabu printing and natural indigo dyeing. Initially planned as three print collections, it evolved into one main collection with three floral sub-collections and a separate Jaypore range. Inspiration came from Suzani embroidery, with motif development & scale exploration guiding design. Budget limitations led to prioritizing screen & block printing, using larger motifs for screens and wooden blocks for borders, offering flexibility and contemporary interpretations. Throughout, natural dyeing experiments and observation of Aavaran’s Dabu workflows informed the process. I created sketches, collaborated with artisans, tested layouts, and experimented with dye variations during block carving. Extensive sampling balanced creativity and technical precision. The final stage involved designing apparel silhouettes archival and new to complement the prints. The project demonstrated the evolution from concept to market-ready collections while navigating the technical and creative nuances of traditional craft.
