Divergent Futures of Social Media explores how Gen Z imagines future socializing technologies beyond the control of Big Tech platforms. Rooted in Design Futures and Strategic Foresight, the project examines hidden forces shaping social media today, including algorithms, data privacy, power structures, bias, wellbeing, and trends, and how they influence access and behavior. Using Design Research methods such as horizon scanning, behavioural mapping, discussion guides, and interactive interviews, a diverse Gen Z cohort was engaged to surface concerns, desires, and fears. Insights were analysed through persona mapping to identify shared patterns and expressions. In its second phase, the project applies Speculative Design and Participatory Design to create futuring tools that link present realities to imagined possibilities. The outcomes include Viral Vibes, an open-access co-design toolkit, a report documenting divergent futures through workshops with IIT Delhi, CEPT, NID Ahmedabad, and YLAC Delhi, and an Instagram page showcasing live artefact documentation.
