DHARINI SHYAMAL PADH
Ms. Tanishka Kachru
This project explores the linguistic and ecological knowledge embedded within India’s pastoral communities, supported by the Centre for Pastoralism. Through fieldwork in Banni (Kachchh), Belgaum, and parts of Andhra Pradesh, the research investigated region-specific vocabulary, proverbs, and expressions that reflect pastoral relationships with land, animals, and seasons. These insights led to the creation of a Pastoral Language and Knowledge Archive (PKLA) documenting place-based language, anecdotes, and ecological observations. The research was translated into two children’s books—one completed and one storyboarded—using visual storytelling to introduce young readers to pastoral lifeworlds in Karnataka and Gujarat. The project also extended into installations and zine workshops at the Living Lightly Festival in Bangalore. Overall, the work highlights indigenous knowledge systems and uses design as a tool to foster empathy, curiosity, and ecological awareness across generations.
