This capstone project explores the upcycling of used glass bottles into useful and aesthetically pleasing goods by combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary methods. The task involves locating used glass, cutting, grinding, and polishing it to achieve superior finishes suitable for both decorative and food-safe applications. A key focus is on flameworking, collaborating with skilled artisans to create intricate glass components and decorative elements. The project also experiments with custom grinding tools, including modified drill bits and velcro-based polishing systems, to enhance precision and efficiency. Beyond glass, the project incorporates wood and cork fabrication for lids and accessories, balancing utility and visual appeal. The foundation of the process consists of iterative prototyping, material testing, tool development, and vendor visits. The result is a line of products that combines design innovation, workmanship, and sustainability, showing how waste materials can be turned into handcrafted, marketable goods.
