Ilakibaar is a photographic exploration of life after incarceration, focusing on individuals in Delhi who were formerly imprisoned in Tihar Jail. The project challenges conventional representations of ex-prisoners, shifting the gaze from criminality to humanity and solidarity. Drawing from a year-long engagement with this circumstantial community, the work combines photographs, handwritten testimonies, and drawings to create an intimate archive of healing, boredom, and joy. Subjects collaborated by choosing their spaces and drawing meaningful items, ensuring the narrative remains grounded in their dignity rather than the spectacle of prison. The term "Ilakibaar," prison slang for someone from one’s hometown, serves as a metaphor for the kinship formed in unlikely places. Rather than a linear narrative, the resulting photobook embraces the unresolved everyday rituals of friendship, care, and routine. Ultimately, it reflects on how trust and belonging are rebuilt, one conversation and one memory at a time, within society.
