This project aims to redesign waste bins for semi-public spaces in Kochi as part of the Mayor of Kochi Design Fellowship, integrating sustainability, cultural relevance, and practicality. Sponsored by the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA), the initiative contributes to Kochi’s participation in the UNESCO City of Design network. Through intensive fieldwork, research, design thinking, and mapping exercises, the project identified challenges within existing urban waste management systems under the Kochi Municipal Corporation. Responding to Kochi’s cultural and environmental context, the redesigned bins function both as efficient public utilities and as symbols of local identity, strengthening citizens’ connection to public spaces. The project explores the intersection of mosaic art, ceramic materials, and sustainability, using children’s drawings as a narrative layer. Inspired by the traditional trencadís technique, broken ceramic waste is repurposed into mosaic surfaces, transforming discarded material into meaningful, culturally grounded public design elements.
