This project examines the traditional appliqué crafts of India, with a focused study on Pipili Appliqué from Odisha, exploring its historical, cultural, and socio-economic significance. Through field visits, interviews, and visual documentation, the project investigates the factors contributing to the craft’s decline, including changing consumer preferences, limited product innovation, economic challenges, and reduced artisan participation. The study also reviews existing efforts by stakeholders to preserve and promote the craft. Building on these insights, the project proposes a series of design interventions that retain the visual language and craftsmanship of Pipili Appliqué while adapting it for contemporary use. By introducing thoughtful product diversification without compromising traditional quality, the project demonstrates how design can play a role in revitalising heritage crafts and sustaining them within modern domestic and global markets.
