Inspired by the Konkan region of India, Tales of Konkan is a ceramic tableware collection that uses form and surface language to narrate lesser-known stories of the region through ceramics. The project focuses on exploring ceramic surface decoration techniques to develop a distinctive visual identity for the brand Olee Maatee, helping it stand out in a competitive market. Research into Konkan’s culture, landscapes, and traditions informed the choice of themes and design direction, translating regional narratives onto functional tableware using a unified surface technique. The process also involved studying market and design trends, analysing competing brands, and understanding user behaviour, eating habits, and challenges associated with ceramic tableware. Production considerations were central to the project, with techniques developed in alignment with the existing infrastructure and skill sets at Olee Maatee’s studio. Iterative prototyping informed the final production process, resulting in a collection that balances storytelling, functionality, and manufacturability.
