TARU JAIN
Mr. Shafique Afzal
This graduation project explores the expressive potential of rug design through two concept-driven collections developed for a Bhadohi-based export house catering to the US market. The project examines how emotional and architectural narratives can be translated into tactile, commercially viable floor coverings using traditional techniques such as hand weaving and tufting.

Collection 1: Architectural Shadows draws inspiration from Brutalist architecture, interpreting structural geometry, light and shadow, and material rawness through neutral-toned, texturally rich rugs that emphasize form, repetition, and spatial presence.
Collection 2: Natsukashi is inspired by the Japanese concept of gentle nostalgia, combining botanical motifs, softened colour palettes, and subtle textures to evoke memory and impermanence.

Through material exploration, market and user research, and hands-on prototyping with artisans, the project bridges narrative storytelling with production feasibility, reflecting a design approach that is both conceptually layered and commercially grounded.
