This research project investigates contemporary Dalit socio-political identity and history in Nagpur, Maharashtra a city of profound relevance to the Ambedkarite movement. The study focuses on the Mahar community and the ongoing revolution led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, exploring the landscape through an Ambedkarite lens. Investigation areas include the assertion of the Mahar-Buddhist community’s spiritual practices, the emergence of collective consciousness among youth through education, and the visual aesthetics of everyday resistance. Using critical design practice and diverse research methods, the project examines the subject from the perspectives of self, culture, and history. The final outcome is a series of photo novellas that provide a nuanced understanding of emancipation and its relationship to the urban landscape. The project’s goal is to present a visually rich narrative of Neo-Buddhism and the fight for dignity. Ultimately, it honors the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar by documenting the persistent struggle for representation and social justice in Nagpur.
