User Experience Design of Next Generation Universal Remote Control

This project aimed at improving the overall experience of the universal remote and providing concepts for a next-generation universal remote. Urban consumers tend to acquire multiple gadgets in their living room. Along with the gadgets, come numerous remotes; handling all the remotes at the same time diminishes the relaxing experience around them.


Universal remotes come in handy in such situations. A universal remote is capable of handling all the gadgets in the living room simultaneously. Although there are umpteen universal remotes currently available in the market, the experience around their usage has not undergone a major change over time. This project demanded a thorough knowledge about the domain and the latest technologies used in a smart home. Initial study involved understanding the range of Logitech Harmony universal remote controls through self-exploration and study of the available research data.

A competitive analysis of the universal remotes available in market and the technologies that are in use or could be used in improving the experience of universal remotes was the next step. This was followed by a user research to capture the context of the living room from users’ point of view and their needs. The research data was analysed to identify design opportunities; based on these, the final concept called, Magic Touch was designed. It is a touch-based gesture remote that provides content based on a user profile and in the context of the show being watched. The focus was to design an easy to use, dynamic interface while providing the maximum information possible.


This project involved reviewing and experimenting with several entertainment devices. This helped keep oneself at par with the current technological trends.
