Santhwanam translates as “a little consolation of love”. The film is a documentary centred on the palliative care initiative undertaken in Kerala. The objective of this film is to inspire people to support or even embark on such projects, whether related to palliative care or any simple act of solicitude for fellow human beings. With the example of the Pain and Palliative Care Society’s success in mobilising the community to help the patients within it, the film aims to instill confidence in the minds of the people to commence on such projects. It is also a study of the successful system model employed by the society.

Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life for patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, be they physical, psychosocial, or spiritual.

The Pain and Palliative Care Society is an organisation of medical professionals and volunteers dedicated to the prevention of suffering among patients and families. The community involved and owned model of the Pain and Palliative Care Society has been immensely successful. By following a very honest, intuitive, and ethical filmmaking process, justice was done to the subject and helped confirm one’s own belief in such a process.

The result, the process, and all the small mistakes created a very rewarding learning experience that has made one confident and enthusiastic about future endeavours. This project helped realise the importance of ethics and filmmaking.
