The project involved developing a simple and user-friendly graphic interface that can be used by families to communicate and share content. The interface has been designed to run on a platform through which it can connect to other such devices and form a network. This will also enable integration with devices such as Smartphones, tablets and computers, so that users may transfer content and synchronise events between their personal devices and the interface.

The target users for this interface are families in Tier II cities in India, with low computer and internet usage. The interface has been designed so that it can be run on a High Definition LED TV and operated using the four direction buttons and select buttons on TV remotes. In order to avoid multiple levels of navigation and cluttered interfaces, the features and functionalities have been kept to a minimum.

The research process began with an analysis of communication between individuals and families, which was then used to construct a framework for communication between families. An important stage was the review of literature on communication within families and design of social networking tools for families. The project deliverables included html interfaces, feature requirements and wireframes for the interfaces and interactions. The final prototypes included the video prototype of the interface and working prototypes for the login page and home page.

This project helped me gain a keen knowledge about things that can augment the present form of computer-mediated communication amongst families. I interacted with people to understand how they use different media for communication, map out their family network and study how and why they actually interact with each other in a certain way. It made me question the meaning of family and family network.
