My diploma project’s brief was to develop a new form language for teaware, surface ornamentation for dinnerware and a new form and cut designs for crystal solitaire collection.
Since the company has a market presence all over India, I categorized the user and market surveys into three parts to cover major metros such as Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The first range was a series of teaware in opal glass. The ergonomics, aesthetics, production limitation and market, user observations were first taken into consideration. The surface ornamentation was a blend of the product’s natural beauty and cut designs and was born of a technique unique to opalware products. The property of glass was best put to use to achieve surfaces which were exclusive and new, in terms of form.
The second part of my brief included the surface development for the dinnerware series. I followed the user and market surveys and the brief from the company and worked on a ‘retro-futuristic’ theme. The colour scheme included silver, off-white, green and baby pink. For the third part of the project, I developed the form and cut design for crystal glass for the solitaire collection, which was targetted at international buyers.
This diploma project was a work of passion, patience and labour. In addition to an extensive industrial experience, it gave me the opportunity to integrate graphics with three-dimensional forms.
