I was fortunate for the opportunity TI cycles provided me with to develop my own brief for my diploma project. After a market study in Chennai, I came up with a brief to design a bicycle for siblings, which will be fun and help enhance their relationship by inculcating the habit of sharing.

The second stage of research involved investigating the context of the product in the Indian market. This helped me understand the market behaviour and needs of consumers. I visited residential areas, apartments, schools, malls, playgrounds, parks, and beaches where I interacted with kids and their parents. I made an effort to spend time with children to understand their relationship with their siblings, their psychology, play behaviour, activity and daily routines and how to deal with them as individuals. This interaction gave me an insight into the problems with bicycles, the market demand, user choices and requirements and customer buying behaviour.

Emphasis was laid on unisex products, keeping in mind the sibling age group, ergonomics, and endurance levels that differ as a result of different physical and psychological requirements. After identifying the design direction, explorations were carried out to conceptualize. The final concept was a Tandem Bicycle for siblings, which was further developed and prototyped. By taking gender into consideration, the concept was developed to make a bicycle that is comfortable, usable and participatory for both the rider and the sibling who is riding pillion.

The project gave me an opportunity to enhance my knowledge. I thoroughly enjoyed working on it and learnt that one of the primary roles of a designer is to co-ordinate between the manufacturer and consumer expectation in order to create a marketable product.
