Parityakto is a film about an old woman, Shashibala, who meets a boy, Anirban, when they are admitted in a hospital. Anirban, who suffers from an illness, is forced to stay away from his joint family while Shashibala has been abandoned by her family. What they have in common is their feeling of loneliness. The film revolves around their relationship and circumstances that bring them together later in life. The film, which deals with the widely prevalent issue of loneliness the elderly face in today’s society, draws inspiration from real-life experiences and stories in Kolkata. Research on government hospitals and old-age homes and interactions with their staff and the residents helped me develop the plot of this film. Soft, soothing colours were used to set the mood for the film. The backgrounds were hand-drawn. After exploring with various mediums, I chose to use acrylic paints and rough brushstrokes to give the film its look and feel. The character animation was in classic 2D on paper and each frame was rendered using watercolours. The dream sequence was rendered with oil on glass to differentiate it from the rest of the film. The film caters to all age groups and does not seek to give out a message to the audience, allowing them to sink into their thoughts. It took me over a year to complete the film. The valuable lessons I learnt in the process, helped sharpen my skills in various aspects of animation and filmmaking such as timing, medium, conceptualization, use of software, visual and film language. Working on the film also gave me the confidence to tackle problems such as sound design, of which I earlier had limited knowledge. |
