The objective of this project was to explore and devise a means to resolve the well-defined, congenital inefficacy of the Roman script, as a vehicle for the transliteration of Indian languages. This inefficacy exists specifically in the context of the speech and writing conventions of the Indian people. It invariably is noticed whenever the Roman script is used to transliterate sounds typical of the Indic phonetic system. My research began with the study of integral subjects such as the evolution of communication and language, history of writing and the contribution of writing tools in the development of script to understand the importance of language, script and communication in human growth. I also tried to understand a few of the script reforms that have happened in India. The final output focuses mainly on the Indian users’ points of view, their understanding and interpretations of the Roman script and the limitations they encounter while using it as a vehicle for the transliteration of Indian languages. My end deliverables were new letter forms and the Sans serif and Serif variations of those letter forms. I now know that the process of accumulating knowledge is quite simple. It includes reading, experiencing, observing and understanding things with interest. This project helped me understand the awesome structure of the Indian scripts and the classification of the Indian phoneme system, a learning that will help me in the future. |
