My project was aimed at the development of toys/recreational products for the company’s exhibition purposes. Playing helps children develop their physical, learning, communication and problem-solving skills. My role was to design products that are fun and exciting and enable the young to learn important life-skills through imagination and play.

The scope of the project was to create a new range of play products, which would be the launch platform for the company. I started the process by trying to gain an insight into child psychology. I studied the aspirations and needs of a child and tried to understand the niche market that is based on children’s fantasies. Then I carried out a design survey of children through the focus-group method. The children’s segment was divided on the basis of research and analysis, following which, design interventions were developed for toys, child furnishings and assorted play materials. The prototypes/mock models were then made.

This project gave me the exposure to home furnishing and room interiors for the children’s segment. Working in the retail industry gave me many opportunities to interact with children and explore and enhance my perception about a child’s imagination. It was an immersion into fantasies and tales and then their realization in the form of the final products. This process taught me to understand and relate one’s professional and personal life. I now feel I am prepared to be a children’s designer.
