My diploma project was to develop a modular, easily attachable and dismantle-able kiosk for an upcoming mall in Chennai.
I first had to understand the client, Prestige Group’s requirements as well as those of the design studio. Then information on kiosk design was collected through case studies, data collection and surveys. Visiting the site helped me understand the design possibilities in the context of the overall space. The research’s deductions helped me redefine the brief and ideation, concept generation and sketches followed.
Based on my understanding and analysis, I selected the most appropriate design, which was finalized after meeting with the client. Detailing was the most crucial part of the process. Easy availability of the material, material possibilities, the joinery and processes had to be taken into account while detailing the design. I also learnt about many practical aspects of model-making.
The designed kiosk structure is completely modular and comprises three major parts — a platform, a central shaft and a canopy. The structure has been designed, keeping in mind the requirements of different vendors and usability.
The design language and the joineries are simple and allow for four kiosks to be clubbed together into a square inside a mall.
This project gave me opportunities to learn from other designers who advised me on practical, feasible, functional and cost-effective factors. I now understand the role a designer plays as part of a team.
