Anahat explores the notes of the Indian Classical Music in terms of colour through the medium of animation. The film intends to highlight the objectives of Indian Classical Music as a medium of entertainment, inspiration, exploration and healing. The raga used in the film is Yaman, the king of ragas which is often taught to beginners and sung during the first few hours of the night. The mood this raga is set for is devotion.
The research for this film included a study of the two types of naad (sounds) and the anahat/aahat (intangible/tangible). I studied how the swaras (Indian musical notes) came into existence, their colours and how they are come together to form a raga. This was integral toward understanding the healing powers of Indian Classical Music.
My film talks about the stress one faces in a highly mechanical world and how music inspires one to move forward. The film is divided into two parts. The first part depicts a factory-like set-up, where people are constantly working. The ones who get tired are replaced by stronger and more able people. One of the characters recalls the seven musical notes when he is tired. These remind him of the different colours in nature. The colours constitute a kaleidoscope of patterns, the raga. He relaxes and becomes part of these colourful patterns. His tired body gains the strength to take a step forward. I used mediums such as paper cut-outs and clay on glass in this film.
I hope this film will inspire people, who are stuck in a routine and do not have the time to listen or to play music, to pursue such interests. I learnt many technical aspects of animation through this film. |
