My diploma film is about a middle-aged man, who returns to his now-deserted hometown and takes on the responsibility to revive its former glory.
At some point in time, I had considered returning to my native place, Rajapur, to practise design after finishing my studies. Rajapur has changed a lot. Till the 19th century, it was a major port and one of the wealthiest towns in India. Now, with little development in the area, locals have started migrating to big cities such as Mumbai and Pune in search of their livelihoods. This led me to question the rampant exploitation that takes place within the rural society, forcing people to migrate. I decided to work on a film about migration, where the protagonist is a migrant who has been exploited by the systems in his own society.
As a fine arts graduate, I understood the techniques of painting well but had little knowledge of movie-making – the nuances of camera movements, editing, sound, etc. Here, at NID, I realised that an animated film is a fantastic medium for narrating a story. In the early stages of pre-production, I actually travelled to Rajapur and interviewed people who had returned to their hometown after long stays in the metros. I also dug out information about the old Rajapur town from the book, Raja Shivchatrapati.
By bringing stories of the small town of Rajapur to the viewers, I hope to inspire them to rediscover their hometowns as well. Animation has helped me put forth my thoughts confidently through a visual language instead of words. However, the end product does differ from what I had in mind. This motivates me to work towards a new and better film. |
