The objective of this project was to develop products, keeping in mind the technique, skill and infrastructure available. I had to design products while taking into consideration the brand value of the store, Studio Scarlet, and help improve its image. The target user group would be the higher-income group and the elite.

I started the research process with an understanding of the company set-up and brand identity, the market, user and client requirements, aspirations and thus determined a niche to work on. Concepts and designs were developed and explored. The final concept led towards conceptualization, exploration, design, sampling and production of the final range of products. The entire design process took into account the industrial product development requirement.

The final products comprised two ranges of decorative ambient lights. The first consisted of a table and floor lamp, a set that was derived from an inspiration taken from marigolds. The second range was a modular light unit, inspired by the ancient jali patterns in architecture. The client’s requirement was to manufacture single pieces of all the designs.

As a designer, one can be very creative and make very complex as well as very simple designs. By working with craftsmen and on the shop floor I learnt how production, finishing and marketing are integral to the design process. Since Studio Scarlett is a home décor store and does not have a production or design unit of its own, my most notable experiences involved attending to the customers by being at the shop front and learning about their preferences and tastes directly.
