Keywords Diesel generator human body composition prototype aesthetic appeal |
My project was to design a new aesthetically appealing canopy for the 15kVA diesel generator of the Mahindra Powerol range. The generator, being a non-movable product, is mostly kept in the backyards of homes, offices & outlets. With recent constraints in space availability, it has been observed that people prefer keeping the genset in front of their homes & outlets. This has raised the need for the genset to be visually appealing such that it catches the attention of passersby.
Target users were classified into the Private category: VIPs, affluent class homes and Retail category: Showrooms, retail outlets, stores, exhibitions, etc in India and abroad.
Research process began with understanding the sponsor company’s background, brand identity and capabilities. This was followed by a study of a diesel generator, its working principles, physical features, ergonomics and functionalities. Market research consisted of a study of the competitor’s products and user survey. A number of form explorations were made, out of which one direction most favourable for development was carried forward.
An analogy was created between the final canopy design and the basic composition of the human body. A 1:5 scale basic model of the genset was built which was used as reference during the technical and form detailing of individual parts of the canopy. The illustrative documentation was treated as an independent project, where each page is a visual projection of data that provides information scattered in 3D space scenes
My greatest learning as a designer was taking individual responsibility from the process of initial research through development of the design and basic engineering, up to execution of the working prototype. |
