The subject of my diploma film is the fear of darkness, something we all have experienced in our childhoods. I looked back at incidents from my childhood spent in my native place for inspiration. The landscape, the cold wind, the heavy rain and the quietness — were all part of the spiritual beliefs of the people. Every evening, we would sit by the fire and narrate stories of witches, fairies, forest spirits and people. The ones that remained with me were the ghost stories, and that is where the inspiration for this story came from.
A boy bullies all the beings smaller than him. Besides his parents, the only thing he fears is the bamboo grove surrounding his house because his grandmother has warned him of the monsters that live there. One day, he is caught in a great storm. He is forced to cross the grove by himself. Scared and shaken, he happens to encounter a bird, which is also as helpless he is.
In order to meet the film’s visual requirements, I tried various mediums such as pencil and ink, brush and ink, dry brush, digital painting, etc. To give the feel of what Darjeeling is like during the monsoon, I hand-painted watercolour textures and later mapped these into 3D models.
Having come from a background in Fine Art, I was always drawn to the idea of making the images on my canvas move. The thought of drawing, painting and sequencing these images together fascinated me. This project, like an on-the-job training experience, gave me room and time to scrutinize my strengths and weaknesses and taught me how to organize and manage time. The dream of making my own film has finally come true! |
